Every business in Utah needs a Business Emergency Plan.
We have all heard it before – we need to be prepared and all households should have an emergency supply kit. But how many of us do? How many of us have one that would actually help us through a Utah business emergency?
It is common knowledge that the Wasatch Front is home to the greatest concentration of people in Utah AND it is a seismically active area. Just look east or west at the mountains and there is your proof. Those mountains were born out of many seismic events over millions of years. And it ain’t done yet!
We need to consider what would really happen if we had a significant earthquake. By doing so it may help people understand just what items they may need. With a major earthquake, many buildings would collapse. Hospitals, schools, theaters, malls, highrises would collapse along with bridges and overpasses. Roads would buckle, power lines would fall and underground pipes, lines, and conduits would be severed. In other words, you most likely would not have any electricity, gas, or water. You would be unable to get to a store. Stores would not be resupplied for a while.
Emergency personnel and services would be overwhelmed. Their ability to get to you would be greatly hampered. Their attention would be on the most severely injured. Communication systems would be swamped. Choose not to procrastinate and prepare your Utah business emergency plan NOW!
What to address in your Utah business emergency plan?
What would you drink and eat? How would you dispose of your waste? If your home was too damaged to stay in what would you do for shelter? What if the quake occurred in fall, winter or spring? Could you help yourself or others with burns, cuts, and breaks? What supplies do you have? How long could you survive without outside help?
There are many other possible scenarios for natural and man-made disasters that could happen in your lifetime. You can choose to take precautions and be prepared and be part of the solution or you can choose to be a victim and a part of the problem. Choose not to procrastinate and prepare your Utah business emergency plan NOW!
I will not recite the list of emergency supplies you should have on hand. Instead I would suggest you visit www.redcross.org; www.bt.cdc.gov; www.fema.gov; www.nursing.umn.edu.edu to name a few good sites. Keep in mind you should have a quick grab kit in the house and one already in your vehicle.
Be safe! Be prepared!
