At All Trades Staffing, we know our workers are at the backbone of every job site. When summer hits, working outdoors can become more than just tough– it can be dangerous. As temperatures climb, so do the risks of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. But with the right precautions, these dangers can be avoided.
Why Heat Safety Matters
Construction, landscaping, and warehouse work often involves long hours under the hot sun or inside poorly ventilated areas. When your body cannot cool itself quickly enough, you risk heat stress, which can lead to serious illness or even death.
Each year, thousands of workers become ill due to heat exposure on the job; the good news is that most heat related incidents are 100% preventable!
Know the Warning Signs
Knowing the warning signs of heat illness can save lives:
- Heat Exhaustion
- Heavy sweating
- Weakness or dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Cool, pale, clammy skin
- Heat Stroke (medical emergency):
- Hot, red, dry skin
- Rapid pulse
- Confusion or unconsciousness
- Seizures
If you or a co-worker show signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately and try to cool the person down with shade, water, or a fan.
Hydrate Like Your Life Depends On It– Because It Might
One of the easiest and most effective ways to stay safe is to drink water frequently, even if you are not thirsty. Aim for one 8-oz cup every 15-20 minutes and avoid energy drinks, sugary sodas, and alcohol, as they worsen dehydration.
Other Tips to Beat the Heat
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing
- Take breaks in the shade or air conditioning when possible
- Use a buddy system: watch out for signs of heat stress in each other
